The Twelve Ascendants, house cusps and signs.
The ascendant (ASC) is a point on the ecliptic that rises on the eastern horizon at sunrise and changes as the earth rotates on its axis.
The ascendant is very important in astrological chart interpretation. It exerts more power than the sun, moon and planets because it infiltrates everything in the natal chart.
The ascendant is the first point of energy in the natal chart and it represents the way we view life. The sign on the ascendant characterises our expression of “who we are” when dealing with others, and our initial action when dealing with day-to-day concerns.
The sign and degree on the ascendant sets up the structure for the twelve equal house divisions which are known as house cusps. For example, if Aries is on the ascendant or first house cusp, Taurus will fall on the second house cusp and Gemini will fall on the third house cusp etc.
The ascendant strongly influences our physical health and appearance, and the way we view life. It is often referred to as the mask we wear upon the stage of life.
Traditionally, the ascendant rules our personality. It characterises the way in which we interact and attract others, and especially in close relationships, de facto relationships and marriage.
The ascendant influences all other house cusps in the natal chart, and it is, without a shadow of a doubt the most individual and defining point of chart interpretation.
