The Influence of the Ruling Planets
Astrology is the oldest science on earth, but I believe the ruling planets have not been given enough credit in comparison to their importance.
The ruling planets are of immeasurable assistance if you want to delve beyond the surface appearance of the natal chart to the connecting energy of the ruling planets and their house cusp signs and houses.
Each zodiac sign on each house cusp has a ruling planet, but because there are twelve zodiac signs, and only ten celestial bodies, Mercury and Venus rule two zodiac signs.
Until Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, astrologers believed that apart from the Sun and Moon there were only five celestial bodies in the solar system; Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, astrologers observed their influence and eventually assigned them to their correct signs.
The ascendant (first house cusp) is established by the sign and degree on the eastern horizon at the exact time, date and place of birth. The natal chart is then divided into twelve 30 degree segments called houses (equal house system). The first point of each house division is known as the house cusp, and the zodiac sign on each house cusp represents the energy of the ruling planet. The Sun, the Moon and the celestial bodies in the solar system have rulership over specific areas of life according to their house cusp signs and houses.
To demonstrate the importance of the ruling planets, let us consider a song writer who invested her money into her songs to have them recorded. She was born with Virgo on the ascendant and Libra on the second house cusp (finance). She approached a recording studio to have her songs recorded at the time when Pluto was transiting her fourth house in Sagittarius and in square her natal Venus in Pisces in the seventh house.
At the time of the recording, she went through a soul-wrenching time where her dreams were shattered through unprofessional advice which resulted in financial loss (transiting Pluto (soul-wrenching) in the fourth house (inner-world) in Sagittarius (unprofessional advice) square natal Venus in the seventh house (attraction) in Pisces (deception) ruler of her second house (financial loss).
In her case, when making financial predictions such as, “When will she be financially rewarded?”, or “When should she hold back?”, look to the transiting planets and note whether any of them form aspects to her natal Venus. Any hard aspects to her natal Venus in Pisces, ruler of her second house (finance) will bring financial insecurity or disappointment and loss. Any soft aspects to her natal Venus in Pisces, ruler of her second house (finance) will bring financial security, fulfilment and gain.
This example demonstrates the importance of the ruling planets in the natal chart without which the aspect of transiting Pluto in Sagittarius in her fourth house square natal Venus in Pisces in here seventh house, ruler of her second house (finance) would probably have been overlooked.
